The Hand-held RFID Reader, developed in VECC, Kolkata, is an embedded system. The main objective of the system is to uniquely identify and to mark attendance for a person/Employee. This requires a distinct feature having the capability of distinguishing different person uniquely. This is possible by the new emerging technology of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).
The Hand-held RFID Reader, developed in VECC, Kolkata, is an embedded system. Embedded stands for ‘hardware embedded with software’. The main objective of the system is to uniquely identify and to mark attendance for a person/Employee. This requires a distinct feature having the capability of distinguishing different person uniquely. This is possible by the new emerging technology of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).
The main parts of an RFID system are RFID tag (having unique ID number) and RFID reader/writer (for reading/writing the RFID tag). In the proposed system, RFID tag and RFID reader operate at 13.56 MHZ frequency. Mifair 4K RFID cards are used with actual used data-size of 96 byte as identity cards in the system. MAD (Multi Application Directory) key, KEY-A and KEY-B as an authorization are also used to read the content of the card. All these keys are required to be put on the RFID hand-held reader. These security keys are installed in the reader using asymmetric encryption, so that after getting loss of this particular handheld reader the keys are not exposed to outsiders.
In this system, the reader reads the data from the card and displays the image of an employee on the screen of the reader. It shows the valid-card, date and time of the swipe. It also stores the swipe data on the card SD memory and sends the data to the to the image display PC for displaying the image of employee at the same time the swiped data is uploaded on the central oracle database through Bluetooth communication.

If a Mifare RFID card is presented before the reader for punching with the scan-switch pressed, the micro-controller reads the data from the card through the RFID module. Once a valid (issued by DAE) card is punched, the controller shows an image of the particular employee (if he/she belongs to VECC) in the LCD display otherwise it shows “NO IMAGE” in case or other DAE units. All the images are stored in the SD card in FAT32 file system. The system can differentiate between an employee ID card & a temporary entry permit card. This system is also capable of identifying the other DAE unit cards explicitly. For any cards not issued by any DAE unit, the system shows “UNKNOWN CARD”. After showing the image the controller stores all the cardpunch information like date, time and employee no. etc., into a file in the SD card as well as sends all the information to a remote computer through Bluetooth connectivity. The LED attached to the system gives the visual indication of card reading status. If the card reading is successful then it shows green light otherwise red
