Frequently Asked Questions About Casualty Services
- Who can come to Casualty?
Any CHSS beneficiary, who feels acutely ill to go to the dispensary and especially during the non-working hours of their respective dispensaries, can come to the Casualty. - When can I come to Casualty?
Casualty is open 24/7. - Can I come to Casualty again if my problem doesn’t get better or gets worse?
Yes, you can come to Casualty again. - How long do I have to wait before being seen by the doctor at Casualty?
Triaging is done at the Casualty by the ‘Triage Nurse’. Any patient on a trolley or obviously very ill with life threatening or potentially life threatening condition, is seen immediately. Patients who are serious but not in life threatening situation are given next preference. Patients who are stable and in whom a delay in treatment will not cause any serious harm, are seen on a ‘first come first serve’ basis. This method of triaging ensures that critical patients are attended to, on a priority basis. Your waiting time will depend on the number and seriousness of patients at Casualty at the time of your visit. - Why do I have to sometimes wait for a long time before a doctor sees me?
The CMO at Casualty is the doctor who sees you first. In case he feels the need, a specialty reference may be called for, after giving basic treatment. The specialty resident medical officer may be busy with other serious or ward patients and may take a while to examine you at the casualty. Remember, you are under the care of the Casualty medical team. - Can I come to Casualty if I am not a CHSS beneficiary?
Yes, in case of an emergency, basic first aid and treatment will be provided to any person reporting to Casualty. After this basic treatment and stabilization, the patient will have to be taken to a different hospital by the relatives. - Can I come to Casualty for my routine injections viz. Vitamins, Insulin etc. prescribed by my dispensary doctor?
No, Casualty is for emergencies .Routine injections will have to be taken in respective dispensaries. - Can I come for my vaccinations to the Casualty?
Tetanus and hepatitis B vaccinations are given at Casualty only if it is an emergency. - Can I come to the Casualty for my antibiotic injections?
In certain specific cases, with a written note from the dispensary doctor, antibiotic injection may be given at Casualty. - Can I get my entire course of medicines at Casualty?
No, only doses of medicines for 1 or 2 days will be given as required for emergency management. You will have to follow up with your dispensary doctor or the OPD as directed. - Can I get an OPD appointment from Casualty?
No, you will have to route your OPD appointments through your dispensary. - Can I get Medical Certificate or Fitness Certificate from Casualty?
No. - Why is MLC registration done in some cases?
Medico legal case registration (MLC) is mandatorily done by the doctor on duty in certain cases like Road Traffic Accidents, Assaults, Sexual assaults, Stab injuries, Attempted suicides, Hangings, Electrocution, Burns, Fall from height, Drowning, Poisonings, Firearm injuries, On duty injuries, Snake bites, Wild animal bites, Any unnatural deaths, or in any case in which foul play is suspected. - If a patient is brought dead to the Casualty, can I get Death Certificate (DC)? Or will a postmortem (PM) be asked for?
In case the patient has been regularly following up with doctors at BARC Hospital, and the treating doctor feels it a natural death or natural progression of disease leading to death, a DC will be issued. But if there have not been any visits to the hospital for a long time, a Post Mortem (PM) may be advised. However, in case a PM has been advised by the doctor at BARCH solely due to insufficient follow up of patient with them, the family may arrange a DC through their family physician (non CHSS) at their own risk. (This is not permitted in MLC cases). - Can I get a blood alcohol test done at Casualty?
This can be done under specific circumstances only. If a patient is suspected to be under influence of alcohol and is brought to Casualty involved in a medico-legal case, blood alcohol level can be requisitioned by the investigating agency only.
