Overview

Lithium ion batteries are one of the best energy storage systems due to their inherent safety, higher capacity and lower weight. These batteries have wide applications in various sectors like telecommunication, transportation and different portable electrical devices. Batteries with NMC-622 cathode has several advantages like it has high energy density, higher rate-capability and low cost. The developed synthesis process is easy and safe.

Lithium ion batteries are one of the best energy storage systems due to their inherent safety, higher capacity and lower weight. These batteries are very useful in various sectors like telecommunication, transportation and different portable electrical devices. Other advantages of lithium ion battery include their (a) light weight (b) high open circuit voltage (c) low discharge rate. Battery containing NMC based cathode exhibit higher voltage, higher capacity and high rate capability.

  • Presently, NMC based cathodes are not manufactured in India.

  • Indian entrepreneurs can directly use these materials for battery production.

  • Synthesized from readily available raw material sourced from local market.

  • The synthesis technology has been simplified.

  • This NMC can be directly used as cathode in Lithium-ion battery.

  • Batteries with different dimensions like coin cell, pouch cell prismatic cells can be fabricated.

  • These batteries are useful in different industries like power tools, portable electrical devices, electrical vehicles etc.

Lithium-ion batteries are one of the best energy storage systems due to their inherent safety, higher capacity and lower weight. In a lithium-ion battery, lithium ions migrate from the anode to cathode during discharge, and back on re-charging. These batteries have several advantages as:

  • Lithium has very high electrochemical potential
  • Lithium is a lighter element than other elements
  • These batteries has high open circuit voltage & very low discharge rate (5-10% )

At present mostly NMC-333 is being used as cathode. This cathode is little more costly and more impact on environment. In that respect, NMC-622 is better. Additionally, it has higher capacity and high rate capability.

This cathode material is going to be very useful for next generation lithium ion battery.

SPECIFICATION

  • NMC-622 black in colour.
  • Material is phase pure.
  • Average particle size of the powder is around 200-300 nm.
  • These cathode have been tested for more than 300 cycles without degradation.

  • These materials are presently imported by battery makers.
  • Indian entrepreneurs can directly use these materials for battery production or they can sell these materials to battery makers.
  • Synthesized from readily available raw material sourced from local market.

APPLICATIONS

  • These materials are electrodes materials to be used in Lithium- ion battery.
  • These batteries can be very much useful in large scale industries like telecommunication, transport etc.
  • These batteries would also be useful in other devices produced by small scale industries like power tools, portable electrical devices etc.
RAW MATERIALS
  • The raw materials are easily available in local market.

INFRASTRUCTURE

  • A chemical laboratory having a fume hood (500 m3/h) & furnace with special atmosphere facility is sufficient for production of these materials. Hot plates, magnetic stirrers, common glass wares, oxygen gas.
  • For characterization of synthesized material, XRD, SEM etc. are also required.

MANPOWER

  • Two chemists (B.Sc. in Chemistry) are required for the production.

Who Should apply


Interested parties with Engineering & Scientific knowledge, good financial background and adequate experience of products manufacturing & fabrication with technical capability in the area of interested technology and having or interested in setting –up facilities for production would be preferred.
