Overview

Increasing waste disposal problem from polymer packaging material have resulted in constant endeavours to replace inert and non biodegradable materials by biodegradable materials. BARC has developed "Oxocatalyzed Polyolefin Packaging Films for Environmental Degradation" in collaboration with Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. The Oxocatalyzed Polyolefin Packaging Films will disposed off easily and eco-friendly in presence of humidity and sunlight without releasing any toxic gases or any residue. It will help in reducing environmental pollution to a great extent.

oxocatalyst is an oxodegradable additive works as a catalyst to initiate the degradation in the polymer backbone. it is an intelligent technological advancement for the economical & environmental solution for the plastics packaging films, typically polyolefin.

SALIENT FEATURES OF THE EME

  • Oxocatalyst has the potential to degrade polyolefins like LLDPE, LDPE, HDPE, PP etc. in presence of sunlight and moisture without leaving fragments of petroleum based polymers in the soil.

  • Can be easily be recycled with pristine as well as recycled polymer to impart oxodegradability to the new product.

  • Addition of oxocatalyst improves the mechanical and barrier properties.

  • No change in the processibility of the polymer.

  • Safe for long-term contact with food.

  • Does not emit methane or nitrous oxide, even deep in a landfill.

Oxocatalyst is an oxodegradable additive works as a catalyst to initiate the degradation in the polymer backbone. It is an intelligent technological advancement for the economical & environmental solution for the plastics packaging films, typically polyolefin.

INTRODUCTION

Oxocatalyst is a high surface volume material, which is transparent when dispersed in the polymer films. On disposal of these films in the open landfills as litter, in presence of humidity and sunlight the catalyst develops persistent oxidative radicals, degrading the polymeric chains. The chains continues to degrades upto 2,500 Dalton, thereafter the microorganism, from the surrounding will degrade and disposes the polymer waste completely without release of any toxic gases or any residue. The degradation can be regulated by the catalyst concentration and the surrounding temperature.

  • The oxocatalyzed polyolefin films degrades in sunlight and moisture.
  • No specific environment is required.
  • Synchronized use of additives can tailor the rate of film degradation.
  • Can be recycled with pristine as well as recycled polymer to impart oxodegradability to the new product.
  • Addition of oxocatalyst improves the mechanical and barrier properties and the rise if much higher on exposure to Electron Beam/Gamma irradiation.

INFRASTRUCTURE REQUIREMENTS

A. Raw materials

  • All the raw materials required are available in the local market.

B. Equipments

  • Overhead stirrer with motor.
  • Jacketed stain steel vessel with heating arrangement
  • Extruder with good mixing capabilities

C. Space

  • Factory shade of 600 sq. ft. area (30 ft. x 20 ft) with DM water facilities.

D. Power

  • Three phase power connection.

E. Manpower

  • Minimum two laboratory technician are required for production of one ton of oxocatalyzed polyolefin packaging films. Actual manpower would depend on production capacity.

Who Should apply


Interested parties with Engineering & Scientific knowledge, good financial background and adequate experience of products manufacturing & fabrication with technical capability in the area of interested technology and having or interested in setting –up facilities for production would be preferred.
