Using radiation induced mutations and/or hybridization, 40 crop varieties encompassing 10 different crops like groundnut, mungbean, blackgram, pigeonpea, soybean, cowpea, mustard, sunflower, rice and jute have been developed, released and Gazette notified for commercial cultivation in different agro-climatic zones in the country. These varieties are endowed with improved characters such as higher yield, earliness, large seed size along with resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Mutation breeding in wheat and Sesbania crops is also being carried out. A late flowering mutant (TSR-1) in Sesbania has been developed with the potential to produce more biomass before flowering and offers an excellent material for green manuring. The deployment of crop technology and large scale production of breeder seeds of these released varieties is being undertaken through linkages with various Central and State Governmental Institutions, seed corporations and NGOs. The societal impacts of these varieties are reflected in terms of their enhanced productivity, popularity and extensive cultivation.
