Nuclear Grade Half Face Mask

OVERVIEW

This technology is a step towards the Atmanirbhar Bharat. Nuclear Grade half face mask is efficient for filtering of sub-micron sized particles at low cost. The requirement of this Nuclear Grade half face mask has huge demand in nuclear & other dust environment industries for protection from radioactive & fine particulate dust. Glass fiber based indigenous technology, developed at BARC will be helpful in removing the harmful fine particulate dust particle from the breathing air. This specially designed Nuclear Grade half face mask has low air resistance and very high particulate filtration efficiency. The main features like comfortable breathing, high filtration efficiency and affordable price make it more attractive. This is an oil resistant and environment friendly Nuclear Grade half face mask and is reusable. The Nuclear Grade half face mask material is Silicon rubber material for oronasal, High Density Polyurethane (HDP) for Cartridge cover, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) Cartridges cover connector & Elastic strap holder, Polyester rubber for elastic strap.

Parties with sound financial background, Automated Manufacturing set up for injection molding and BIS approved testing set up, having experience in handling Glass Fiber Media will be Preferred.
The technology is available for transfer 24 months.

INTRODUCTION

Half face masks, based on glass fibre media in cartridges form, are being used in Nuclear Industries. These cartridges are being imported and assembled to form half face mask. The silicon based mask and filter cartridge have been developed at BARC, using indigenously developed glass filter media (HEPA) at a nominal price. This in-house developed Nuclear grade half face mask is a breakthrough solution towards Atmanirbhar Bharat. It is engineered to maintain a comfortable breathing condition and also to avoid build up of CO2 in the mask’s internal volume.

WORKING MECHANISM

Glass fiber media has been used as a filtering medium. The filter media mainly works on following three mechanisms -

  • Inertial impaction
  • Interception
  • Diffusion

TThe technology of Nuclear Grade Half Face Mask uses specially designed Glass fiber (HEPA) media developed by BARC. It meets all the international / national standard parameters such as low breathing resistance, splash proof with excellent fit factor and environmental compatibility. Figs 1 & 2 show mask filtering cartridge and configuration.

PERFORMANCE OF MASKS

The indigenously developed mask meets all the criteria as per international and national standards like IS15322. All parameters like breathing resistance, splash resistance and flammability have been tested and approved. Glass fiber based filter media needs only BARC approval.

REQUIREMENTS FOR COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION 

Infrastructural Requirements

  • Space
  • Approximately 1000sq feet space will be required to set up the assembly facility (dust proof with controlled temperature (25±1°C) and humidity (<55%) with continuous electricity)

  • Facilities required
    1. Molding set up for molding of silicon based outer enclosure
    2. BIS approved test set up (Optional)
    3. Cutting and machining set up for sizing of media in adequate form.
    4. Pleating machine for pleating of media
    5. Packaging facility for packing of face masks
  • Manpower Requirement

    Two skilled workers, One Supervisor ( Diploma in Mechanical Engineering)
